When writing about FCSN programs, consider obtain the following information during the interview.
- background on what inspired them to start the class
- Instructor(s) background
- Introduce class
- Purpose: what the class aims to achieve
- Why this is important
- How the class is structured, the reasoning behind the activities
- How the class came together
- Challenges encountered and how they were overcome
- Interesting Activities
- Detailed examples (with screenshots)
- Student reception
- Instructor(s)' thoughts on teaching the class
- Future plans or improvements (if there are no future plans, then don't have to focus on this)
- Request for artwork or pictures (of class participants doing activities, sample worksheets used in the class, etc)
During the Interview:
The purpose of the interview is to get as much information as possible so that you will be able to write an in depth article that is informative to the readers. Be friendly and encourage them to talk more. You can obtain the information by sending the above abstract requesting them for an answer, but that would be the last resort when there is no other way to obtain an interview. During the interview, you listen to the tone of their voice, and look for potential stories to pull from the interviewee. It is often these little stories that touch the reader's hearts. Show your genuine interest during your interviews, and ask questions to clarify. Think from the perspective of the potential reader, what information would they like to know, what is confusing that needs further clarification. Clarify information regarding any kind of dates (such as program start date, when the program changed to another format, important milestones, etc.) during the interview. You can ask for permission to record the interview so that you can later refer to it. There are online transcription apps that can also make your job easier.
